This Weekend in San Diego County (September 8-9)
There’s so much going on around the county this weekend, it’s hard to choose what to do first. You can start with our local attractions (SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, LegoLand, Balboa Park, Old Town), and it’s not too late to enjoy the beaches, but this weekend, there’s so much more!
It’s a wild weekend for animal lovers. The Wiener Dogs are running at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday. That evening, the Escondido Humane Society will hold their 14th Annual Gala, “Tails at Twilight,” and on Sunday, head to Del Mar for the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon.
On Saturday, the Grape Day Festival will take place in Escondido, starting with a parade, followed by grape stomping, live entertainment, crafts, art show, children’s games, vendors, and food. For more local fun, you can go on to the Serra Mesa Street Fair.
The 62nd Anniversary of the Liberation of the Philippines will be commemorated on Saturday in Balboa Park, while Brazil’s Independence Day Fair will take place in El Cajon, and the 29th Annual Greek Festival will be celebrated in Cardiff-by-the-Sea all weekend.
For some ocean fun, the La Jolla YMCA Surf Series is taking place in Oceanside on Saturday, and the 77th Annual La Jolla Rough-Water Swim will take place on Sunday in La Jolla.
Car lovers can drive on over to the 3rd Annual Little Italy Italian Motorsport Show on Saturday.
For one night only the 450 Photo Experience will be on display at the prestigious Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. San Diegans will have the opportunity to view the world of the children living in the Diamond FEMA trailer park in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, one of the hardest hit regions of Hurricane Katrina. Experience their life post Hurricane Katrina through their eyes as photography from children ages 8 to 14 will be on display.
On Sunday, you can visit Oceanside for Antiques on Mission, or if you prefer music to antiques, go to Ocean Beach to enjoy the Jazz 88 Ocean Beach Festival.
The Chicago Bears will also be playing against our Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Last, but certainly not least, the ASR World Trade Expo 2007 (the trade show for surf, skate, swim, resort and urban/streetwear products) will continue all weekend at the Convention Center.
There’s a little something for everyone in San Diego County this weekend. For more information about these, and many other events around the county, see our Calendar section.
San Diegans, get away from your computers and get out there and enjoy this gorgeous weekend (but come back soon)!

Oh MY GOD.
I am SO MAD that I don’t live in San Diego.
I can’t adequately express my excitement– I’ve never even seen someone surfing in real life, but a DOG surfing contest?
Too much!
