The San Diego Traveler

This Weekend in San Diego County (September 22-23)

by Carole A. Lane on September 21st, 2007

Are you looking for some fun this weekend? Of course you can start with our local attractions (SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, LegoLand, Balboa Park, Old Town), but that’s not all that the county has to offer.

“Street Scene” can hardly be called that, since it’s being held at the Coors Amphitheatre, but head down to Chula Vista for non-stop music and entertainment all weekend. If you’d rather party in North County, Encinitas is holding the 13th Annual Oktoberfest while Oceanside enjoys KIFM’s Jazz at the Beach, both on Sunday.

If you’re into Longboard surfing, cruise on over to Cardiff for the Roxy Jam Cardiff on Saturday or Sunday (or both). If you’d rather take a bike ride, circumnavigate the Carlsbad Lagoon with Sierra Club bicyclists on Sunday.

The Urban Dare San Diego is a wild race where smarts can beat speed. It takes place on Saturday in Balboa Park. Similarly, the Subaru Urban Assault Race, the “largest urban adventure race series in the country” will happen in El Cajon on Sunday, with biking, timed brain teasers, and physical challenges.

How about a local festival?

  • The 13th Annual Pacific Islander Festival will take place in Mission Bay (Saturday and Sunday) .
  • The Flower Fields of Carlsbad will host Taste of Carlsbad (Saturday).
  • The 5th Annual “Celebrate the Craft” will showcase regionally grown ingredients, innovative cooking, and wine making in La Jolla on Saturday evening.
  • Noche Havana, a Cuban/Brazilian concert and dance party featuring live Salsa and Samba bands as well as authentic Cuban cuisine will be held at Palomar College on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Has it been a while since you’ve seen a Packard? There’s a Regional Packard Gathering traveling around the county, stopping at various locations all week.

Perhaps you’d rather give back to the community. Oceanside 2007 (on Saturday) is the 6th annual neighborhood clean up and revitalization project, and you can help.

If you’re spending Saturday by the bay, be sure to look up. The Red Bull Air Race 2007 will take place in the skies, with the best views from north and south peninsulas of the Embarcadero. Later that night, the KGB Sky Show will feature fireworks above Qualcomm Stadium following the SDSU football game against Portland State.

As the San Diego summer winds down, it’s can still be lovely to just take a little walk along the beach, in rain or shine. For more information about these, and many other events around the county, see our section. No go and enjoy your weekend!
