The San Diego Special Edition - October 20, 2008
Welcome to the October 20, 2008 issue of The San Diego Special Edition! It’s great to see so many of our favorite bloggers back this month, as well as some new voices joining us. The variety of these articles and blogs is wonderful, and really shows the breadth of the San Diego experience. Have a great read.
animals
This month we start with Larry Hogue, who presents Bighorn Sheep Are Counting On You posted at DesertBlog, describing it as a post about threats to southern California’s wild bighorn sheep. If you’d like to get involved and help:
“You still have time — until October 27th — to write a quick comment on the agency’s misguided plan. We have a complete action alert up on our website, with a link to the government’s new online comment form. (Or just find the form at the yellow cartoon balloon labelled “Add Comments” on this page.)”

Next a whole photo gallery from Ocean Beach’s Oktoberfest is presented by patty jones in her post Ocean Beach Oktoberfest! Photo Gallery posted at OB Rag Blog.
Prost!
If you’re looking for something fun to do this Halloween, check out Halloween 2008 : Things To Do in San Diego This Halloween from Sage at RandomSanDiego.com. As Sage explains:
“Halloween in San Diego is a truly unique experience and this year in particular, it seems that the entire city has gotten into the spirit of Halloween (pun intended). Wondering what Halloween events are going on in and around San Diego this year? Read on for a list of random San Diego Halloween Events and Happenings.”
business
Dan Melson’s back with us this month to present APR vs APY: What The Difference Between Note Rate and APR Tells You posted at Searchlight Crusade. Dan always makes complex subjects clearer and, guess what - he’s done it again.
culture
Now to a new blogger to our group this month. CzechFolks presents Do You Want to Meet with Czechs and Slovaks? (Chcete se Setkat s Cechy a Slovaky?) posted at CzechFolks.com, saying,
“My husband and I created a bilingual website for Czechs and Slovaks abroad. We live in San Diego North County. We would like to invite all Czechs and Slovaks to our monthly meetings in Kashtan European Market & Bistro. Our meetup is listed in our submitted article. Our website contains articles designated to the Czech and Slovak heritage. We also have information about our food, language, history, and events.”
Welcome CzechFolks!

On to a bit of controversy: Ryan Hazelton presents What’s in a Word? San Diego Student Gay Club Uses Offensive Acronym in Name posted at The Ryan Thomas Collection.
“Two gay and lesbian student groups at San Diego City College and Mesa College create a controversial name for their groups, using a homophobic epithet in hopes of taking the word back, but have met objections from school and student body officials.”
What do you think? Add your voice to the discussion.
economy
Here’s something many San Diegans are waiting for: Brian Brady presents San Diego Real Estate and Housing Outlook for 2009 posted at World Wide Wealth Advisors. Take a look in Brian’s crystal ball before making plans for your real estate next year, or go on to the next post Are we there yet? posted at Foreclosed-SanDiego.com by Peter Toner.
music
I submit Music History in San Diego as my posting this month from The San Diego Traveler. This article highlights some of the famous musicians who’ve performed here in San Diego county over the past ninety years. Amazing!

With Halloween quickly approaching, T. Dalia’s post seems particularly timely. She presents The Spirit of Kate, part 2 posted at Daily Dalia, and it will make you want to learn more about one of San Diego’s famous ghosts.
Let’s take a quick break at The Occasional Odd Crop, where Mark Dodge Medlin presents Inner glow saying,
“These odd pieces at Lawrance Furniture would go perfectly in any living room - especially one in Oz or Whoville.”
You’ll have to go to his blog to see what Mark’s talking about.
technology
“One of the nation’s top scientific achievements is located in our own backyard. The Hale Telescope is going to be profiled in a PBS Documentary and NASA Webcast called “A Journey to Palomar - America’s First Journey into Space”.”
explains Tim Schenck at The Best Places In San Diego!, when he presents
Palomar Observatory About to Get a Whole Lot of National Attention. This looks like Must-See-TV!
Then we have a couple of interesting technologies highlighted by our bloggers: Vimeo is presented by Enrique Gutierrez at Sociosophy, and Debra Simpson presents Skype Meets Mikogo - Desktop Sharing Just Got Easier posted at North San Diego Business@Large. The online world just keeps getting more interesting, doesn’t it?
travel
Coming from high tech and heading into very low tech, Jeff Dowler presents A Fall Afternoon in Southern California - A Jaunt to Julian, California posted at Carlsbad Homes and Real Estate Tidbits. A trip to Julian is like visiting a town from yesteryear, and just goes to show you that you can find just about any lifestyle right here in San Diego county.
