The President and Governor Visit San Diego County
Today, President Bush and Governor Schwarzenegger visited San Diego County, and stayed for a press conference at Kit Carson park in Escondido. After being introduced by Governor Schwarzenegger, the President said,
“…I appreciate the leadership of Governor Schwarzenegger. I said earlier when we were at the neighborhood, there’s no hill he’s not willing to charge, no problem he’s not willing to solve. And we’ve got a problem out here, and I appreciate his leadership. It makes a significant difference when you have somebody in the statehouse willing to take the lead. …”
Did that strike anyone else as surreal?
Watching the daily coverage of the fires, I was completely unaware that our Governor was running things. I’ll bet that’s also news to the firefighters, Ron Roberts, the County Office of Emergency Services, Mayor Jerry Sanders, the American Red Cross, as well as all of the San Diegans who have pitched in to take care of the people who needed them, all of which have been instrumental in keeping this disaster from becoming another Katrina.
It’s not that we don’t appreciate anything the governor does to help, but did he supervise the cross-regional fire fight, or organize the shelters, staff and supplies that cared for our evacuees? Let’s give credit where credit’s due. It’s San Diegans, the Red Cross, and the firefighters from here and everywhere around us that are the heroes today.
