The Orchids are in Bloom
The orchid show is now in bloom at San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. This annual event coincides with the Butterfly exhibit every year, and probably has a following nearly as large.
With more than 800 exotic orchids on display in front of the Animal Care Center, the colors and variety are enough to stop you in your tracks. Even if you came to the Wild Animal Park for the animals, this
display may make a flower-lover out of you.
The combination of the orchid show and the butterfly exhibit can boost park attendance by as much as 30 percent.
In addition to expansive flower beds and moss-covered backdrops, there is a staged dinner party using flowers on the table, chairs, mantel, and planters to dramatic effect.
Can you imagine arriving at the dinner party, encountering a table like this? Not only are the centerpieces over the top, but there are full bouquets tied to the back of every chair!
Where do all of these flowers come from?
The Wild Animal Park buys some of the orchids, rents others, and borrows some from orchid clubs throughout the area.
To see these flowers first-hand, be sure to go to the Wild Animal Park by April 22nd, because the orchid show will conclude on that date, and you’ll have to wait until next year to see anything like this again.

[…] The Butterfly exhibit is just one reason to attend the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park this month. This is also the time to see the Orchid Show, and the new Journey to Africa tour is definitely worth a visit. I’ll write more about these attractions soon, but in the meantime, be sure to check the Wild Animal Park/San Diego Zoo Calendar for all of the events happening in April. […]
