For the athletic pooch, there’s the Surf Dog Competition at Loews Coronado Bay Resort at Imperial Beach on Saturday (June 28). Coronado Surfing Academy will provide surfing lessons for the dogs from 9:30 to 10:30am, and competition will start at 11am. You can compete in a tandem surfing event with your dog from 12:30 to 1:30. This will be followed by a furry fashion show at 1:30, with the awards ceremony at 1:45. There will be puppy portraits, mutt massages, goody bags and more, and watching this event is free furry & family fun.

Working dogs will compete in the Sheepdog Trials at the San Diego Highland Games over the whole weekend at Brengle Terrace Park in Vista.

Then for our more glamorous doggie divas, the South Bark Dog Wash will host a Canine Runway Event from 11-2:30. Pooches will be judged on appearance, talent, and overall presentation. Two winners from South Bark will proceed to semifinals in Los Angeles.

Ocean Beach reported 15-foot waves  around 3 yesterday afternoon, while we were looking at the gorgeous views from Sunset Cliffs (a bit further south).

Sunset Cliffs Park lies on 68 acres of bluffs and walking paths high above the Pacific. There’s a long staircase that

heads down to the rocky beach, but the surfers often take a shortcut, climbing down the rocks right into the surf.

This is a great spot to stop and watch the waves, the birds, or the surfers. You can even sometimes see the migration of the whales from here. There are many picturesque photo spots all along the cliffs and the beach.

This is not the spot to bring little ones, however, unless you’re holding onto them at all times. The cliffs are open, and along the edges they look like they’re about to crumble into the sea at any moment. Children should not be allowed to run around here.

The beach has no lifeguard, so it’s also not the best place that you could pick for  a swim. The surfers seem to like it though.

I can’t say that I was overly disappointed at missing the huge waves, because our visit to Sunset Cliffs was still wonderful. The sun was shining, and it seemed like we really needed it, after  so much rainy weather lately. The waves, although not 15-footers, were beautiful and even majestic. It was such a lovely day, and I hope you enjoy the pictures.
