St. Patrick’s Day, San Diego Style
You won’t have to search far to find a St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year. In addition to all of the bars and pubs that will be pouring green beer, Irish whiskey, and Guinness all around town, there will be some serious partying going on in the Gaslamp at shamROCK on March 17. Cloud 9 Shuttles have even been arranged for those who are looking a bit too green to drive home afterward. (Click on the link for details.)
At the other end of town, Encinitas Rocks, with live music from Crash O’Malley and Martinihead, dancing, food and drink will be at the Encinitas Elks Lodge.
The Bad Blokes will offer “Rowdy Celtic” at Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill in Carlbad, along with Skelpin who’ll perform Irish folk jams (on the 16th and 17th).
At Dublin Square Irish Pub & Grill, Raggle Taggle will offer a mix of traditional Irish and inspired Celtic, Scottish, English, and Welsh jigs and reels with talented traditional Step Dancers. Also performing is Sligo Rags, a “Celtic-oriented ensemble with an upbeat, energetic collection of acoustic musicians and vocalists specializing in Irish and Celtic music that contains tunes ranging into the bluegrass, country, jazz and swing realms as well.”
You can catch a Irish sing-along at Jimmy Love’s with a performance of The Incase Trio.
If you can’t wait until the 17th to get your Irish on, the House of Ireland in Balboa Park will hold their annual Lawn Program on March 16. They’ll be selling Irish stew and soda bread, while onlookers watch local students from Irish dance schools perform.
The 28th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival and Parade will be held on March 15 in Balboa Park. The St. Patrick’s Day 10k Run and 2-4 Mile Run/Walk will also take place in Mission Bay Park on that day.
Even sooner, on March 13, adults and children of Butler Fearon O’Connor School of Irish Dance will perform Irish dances in full, traditional costumes at El Cajon Library. Ensemble members will discuss costumes, wigs, shoes, history of Irish dance, competitive dancing. See the San Diego County Library Calendar of Events for other festivities at libraries throughout the county all month.
Not Irish? No worries! Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day!
