South Bay Expressway Opens
If you’re planning on doing any driving around San Diego over the holidays, note that your GPS or map may need some updating. A new 10-mile toll road opened this week from Spring Valley to the Otay Mesa border crossing.
You may enter South Bay Expressway from the north at SR-54 and at Otay Mesa Road/SR-905 from the south. The Expressway features several convenient on/off ramps located at San Miguel Ranch Road, East H Street, Otay Lakes/Telegraph Canyon Road, Olympic Parkway and Birch Road. At each of these locations, you can use FasTrak to pay the toll electronically or stop and pay with cash.
Driving on the South Bay Expressway will be free until December 2. If you open a South Bay Expressway FasTrak account, you can drive free until January 13, 2008.
The regular cost for traveling on the toll road will be $2.50 for 2-axle vehicles. Three to four-axle vehicles will pay $5, with larger vehicles paying $7.50. A FasTrak pass will bring those costs down for frequent drivers.
How did this road get built? This project has been in the region’s plans since 1959! It was finally funded by an investment bank in Australia, and will be financed, operated and maintained with tolls collected from the people who choose to use it in the next 35 years. After that, the state takes ownership and can decide whether it remains a toll road.
