Shark Attack!

by Carole A. Lane on April 25th, 2008

Big Momma.jpg; Photo by philstrThis morning, 66-year-old retired veterinarian Dave Martin was swimming off the coast of Solana Beach when he was attacked by a shark. It is believed that it was a great white shark that is still on the loose.

After the attack, Dr. Martin was dragged from the water by fellow swimmers, but died from the severe injuries to his legs.

This was a very rare event. In fact, experts say that there are an average of less than five fatal shark attacks per year across the globe, and they’re almost unheard of in San Diego county.

Beaches from Torrey Pines to South Carlsbad will be closed to swimming and surfing throughout the weekend, as a precaution.

That is something right out of the movie “Jaws”! I didn’t think that Great Whites would get so close to the beach considering their great size.

I know, it’s hard to believe. It’s certainly not a common occurence. I can’t even imagine how horrifying it was for the victim, as well as for all of those witnessing the attack.

We do see fins in the surf every once in a while, and it always gives me some concern, until I’m sure it’s the dolphins. Now I guess I won’t feel so foolish for being worried when I see fins.
