Sea Life Center to be Built in Carlsbad
Merlin Entertainments Group, owners of Legoland and other attractions throughout Europe, has announced their intention to build a $20 million Sea Life center in Carlsbad, which they expect to open this summer next to Legoland.
Sea Life Legoland will include a 36,000-square-foot, two-story aquarium featuring sea life found in the waters of California. There will also be tanks of sea horses and rays, and a giant circular display where visitors will be surrounded by schools of circling fish. What has been described as an “Indiana Jones-like adventure in 1920s Egypt” is also planned.
Although the aquarium will operate separately from Legoland and require its own admission, it will incorporate some elements familiar to Legoland visitors, such as Lego building blocks used in miniature underwater scenes.
This will be the 29th Sea Life center/sanctuary owned by Merlin Entertainments, the first in North America. The others are in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, England and Scotland (UK), Ireland, Germany, France, and Finland, as well as an Aquatica water park in Italy.
In addition to continued expansion of Legoland’s attractions, Merlin Entertainments also has plans to build its own Legoland hotel in coming years.
