San Diego - Sun, Wind, Rain, Hail & Snow?

by Carole A. Lane on February 23rd, 2007

Winds howled through San Diego during the night, waking me at 4 a.m. from a much needed sleep.  I got up to watch the trees bending and shaking, listening to the wind crying through the canyon and whistling past my house. By daylight it was raining as I drove through Vista, Oceanside, and Carlsbad.  I had the intermittent wipers sometimes on, sometimes  off.  Bright sunlight broke through, and before I could get my Oakleys on, huge drops pounded the windshield in a sudden downpour.  A rainbow interrupted the clouds on the horizon, which I might have missed if I hadn’t had an excited six-year-old in the car.

Ramona, Poway and Del Mar each got some rain.  The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department announced the availability of  to anyone who needs them in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Kearny Mesa, San Ysidro, Scripps Ranch and Tierrasanta.  During storm situations, the Lifeguard Service allows the public to fill sandbags with sand from the beaches.  in Valley Center, Ramona, Julian, Bonita, Alpine and Lakeside.

There was a wind advisory for the deserts, where gusts could clock up to 45 mph.

At the same time, Solana Beach and Rancho Bernardo were reporting hail.

Snow on Palomar Mountain, photo courtesy the Dept. of Public WorksJulian got an inch of snow, and the schools declared a snow day, to the surprise and delight of local children.  You’re probably laughing at us now, but snow is a big event when it hits San Diego, even if it’s only an inch.

Mount Laguna and Cuyamaca Mountains both received several inches of snow, and Palomar Mountain (at right) got two inches.

Drivers were asked to carry chains in Borrego Springs, Julian, Mount Laguna, Palomar Mountain, Ranchita Springs, and Warner Springs due to icing conditions.

For advice on dealing with California winter storms, a  brochure is available from the governor’s office.

Somewhere in San Diego county, you can find just about any type of weather you like; today, we had it all!
