San Diego Loves Dance!
I know that America loves American Idol, but personally, I’m addicted to the dance shows. I don’t really know why Dancing with the Stars (DAWS) and So You Think You Can Dance are each so captivating, but something about watching the dancers’ progress from stumbling about to polished ballroom professionals just gets to me, and I’m not alone.
Dancing with the Stars
Now that Apolo Ohno and Julianne Hough have been announced as the winners of this year’s Dancing with the Stars, I wondered how long it would be before the DAWS tour reached town. I’m sorry to say that there are no San Diego tour dates
on their calendar, and few of this season’s contestants have signed on for the tour so far. I’m hoping that these circumstances will change. In the meantime, you can check the tour schedule for yourself to see updates as they’re posted.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t see the professional dancers. DAWS professionals Cheryl
Burke (2-time DAWS champion) and Brian Fortuna will appear at the San Diego Dancesport Championships in June. Nick Kosovich, another professional who appeared on the series briefly (dancing with Tatum O’Neal), will emcee the
San Diego Dancesport Championship this year.
Of course, we have another connection to Dancing with the Stars - Chula Vista’s own Mario Lopez, who was the runner up for the championship in season 3. Mario is now the co-host of the weekend edition of Extra. It is rumored that he also recently auditioned to replace Bob Barker on The Price is Right.
So You Think You Can Dance
On Thursday of this week, my other favorite dance show, So You Think You Can Dance, will begin airing it’s third season. San Diego has a connection to
this show as well. Mary Murphy, the hilariously loud judge, is the founder and owner of the Champion Ballroom Academyin San Diego. In addition to her many accomplishments and credits, one of the national dance competitions that she co-organizes is the San Diego Dancesport Championships, which will take place on June 8-10 at the Westin Horton Plaza in San Diego.
Does anyone know of any other San Diego connections to our favorite dance shows?
