San Diego is Going Over-the-Line

by Carole A. Lane on July 12th, 2007

This weekend, the 54th Annual World Championship Over-the-Line (OTL) Tournament will start at Fiesta Island on Mission Bay.

If you’re not familiar with OTL, it’s a form of beach softball which started right here in San Diego long, long ago. It’s played by men and women from 18 to 80-years-old, and is limited to 1,200 teams of three persons each, playing almost 2,400 games in two weekends. Click here for the rules, or watch the first video for more about what you can expect.

Over 50,000 spectators are expected to attend OTL this year. Admission is free, but OTL is more than “beer, babes and bats on the beach.” It serves as the primary fundraising source for Old Mission Beach Athletic Club’s (OMBAC) year-round charitable programs.

The next video provides highlights of the games.

The Schedule

There will be an opening night party on Friday afternoon at Stinky’s Oasis (the big white tent next to the T-shirt shop) on Fiesta Island.

The Tournament will begin on Saturday morning (7/14/07) at 7 a.m. and will continue until dusk. On Sunday, the schedule will repeat. The next weekend (July 21-22), the schedule will repeat again.

Miss Emerson

All contestants will be interviewed by a committee of OMBAC members, and be judged on their stage presence and interview. The finals will be held on Saturday, July 21.

To Get To Over-the-Line

If you haven’t already paid for reserved parking, it’s too late, so plan to park and ride a shuttle to the tournament. (The parking lots are expected to be full by 9:30 a.m., and they’ll close Fiesta Island to traffic other than buses after that.)

Old Mission buses will shuttle passengers to and from the event at these locations:

  • Bonita Cove parking lot and bus station
  • Linda Vista Trolley Station on Napa Street (but there is no parking there)
  • Island Shuttle - Entrance to Fiesta Island (Park at Pacific Highway lot)
  • Park at the South Shores boat ramp parking area off of SeaWorld Drive; the bus will pick up at the Sun Runner lot at the corner of Sea World Drive and Pacific Highway

Although this weekend’s championship is an adult event, the youngsters will get their turn on August 26th, when the 38th Annual OMBAC Junior OTL World Championship will commence on Fiesta Island.

Have fun, San Diego!
