Pump it Up!

by Carole A. Lane on April 29th, 2007

If you have children, and you haven’t been to a party yet, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. This is the new “in” party place for kids, and they can’t wait to jump in.

Pump it Up offers a large fun-filled room of inflatable slides and bounce houses for tumbling, jumping, climbing and sliding. The exact configuration varies by location.

In San Marcos, where I visited this weekend, there were two bounce houses, one huge slide, and a long inflatable obstacle course inviting racers to compete on parallel tracks. If you go there, it’s a safe bet that you’ll be talked into a race or two, so be sure to wear your socks and comfortable pants.

Pump it up rents out their facilities and staff for private parties, which include time in the play room with the inflatables, as well as the party room. There, they’ll serve your guests pizza, cake and drinks (at an additional charge).

You’ll be amazed at how organized a wild party like this can be. The staff will supervise all activities, leaving you to greet guests and play . At the appointed time, the staff will stop everything, sending everyone to the shoe cubbies to retrieve belongings. Then the kids will be corralled together for a group picture. Next, they’ll quickly line up by the door to be spritzed with hand sanitizer before being escorted in to the party room for refreshments.

After eating, the guest of honor will be seated on an inflatable throne to open the gifts that are awaiting them (which were collected at the front door as guests arrived).

When your time is almost up, the staff will bag the gifts (including those that remain unopened, if you’re running late), put them all in a cart and wheel them out to your car for you.

Mini-parties include up to 14 kids (+ the guest of honor) for one hour of play, followed by a half hour in the party room. This costs approximately $175-$195, varying by location.

apr-017-copy.jpgClassic parties include up to 25 kids (+ 1) for one and a half hours in the play room, followed by half an hour in the party room. They charge approximately $225-$290 for this, depending upon the location and time of the party.

Pump it Up also offers “pop in playtimes” during a couple of mornings each week, for younger children. The time and age for playtimes varies by location. The cost is $8 per child (or $6 for siblings). Some locations have special packages for other groups, so you’ll need to check the website for specifics.

Pump it Up franchises are popping up around the country. Here in San Diego County, you can find Pump it Up in , and .

The best things about this place: little preparation, you get to play too, no clean-up, and after an hour or two here, everyone goes home ready for a nap or a good night’s sleep. I’m pumped already. How about you?
