Labor Day Weekend in San Diego County (September 1-3)

by Carole A. Lane on August 31st, 2007

For a holiday weekend, there really isn’t all that much going on around the county to celebrate Labor Day. Of course, that means that you’ll have more time for the beach and our other wonderful attractions (SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, LegoLand, Balboa Park, Old Town). With the heat, I suggest heading out later in the day though.

If you’re determined to find a Labor Day event, there’s a Labor Day Stickball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Little Italy. In Imperial Beach, a Beach Front BBQ will take place a the pier. The 37th Annual Barona Powwow will take place in Lakeside. There’s also the 32nd Annual Ukrainian Festival in Balboa Park all weekend.

Expect Labor Day sales all weekend, such as the one at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets. Henry’s Farmers Markets are also offering free tastings all weekend.

As for sports, there’s an all-woman, full-contact football game in La Jolla on Saturday, and the San Marcos Blast bike ride on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, the Super Indoor Custom Car Show will be held at the San Diego Convention Center. There will also be a special concert in memory of Princess Diana, ten years after her death, at Spreckels Organ Pavilion.

Monday brings us the San Diego Auto and Cycle Swap in Qualcomm Stadium, and the 78th Annual Oceanside Pier Swim.

If none of these ideas quite grab you, the Del Mar Races continue through September 5th. If you’d rather go inside to cool down, the Dead Sea Scrolls at San Diego Natural History Museum (Balboa Park) and Bodies..The Exhibition at University Towne Center are both unforgettable exhibits.

For more information about these, and other events around the county, see our section.  Now go out and enjoy the San Diego summer!
