It’s Girl Scout Cookie Time in San Diego

by Carole A. Lane on January 25th, 2007

There’s a chill in the San Diego air, but intermingled with the seabreeze is a bit of excitement and the sweet aroma of Girl scout cookies.  Cookie time has just started this week, and girl scouts are now trekking door-to-door, taking orders throughout San Diego neighborhoods for cookies that will be delivered at the end of February or beginning of March.

My daughter is a 1st grade brownie, so we had no experience selling cookies, and I can tell you first-hand that it’s a very different experience than selling boy scout popcorn.

Boy scout popcorn is a good product (I’m especially partial to their kettle corn), but our yearly purchase of one box (15 microwave packets) lasts our family an entire year.  It’s not an easy sell, at least in our neighborhood, and my son was lucky to sell a few boxes each year, mostly to family members.

Girl scout cookies, on the other hand, just about sell themselves!  My daughter went out on Saturday, looking adorable in her little brownie uniform, with me tagging along to chaperone.  Our neighbors weren’t just happy to see her; they were ECSTATIC!

We got one neighbor out of the shower, and even dripping wet, she was so happy to see us that she insisted on ordering several boxes right then and there.  Another neighbor woke his wife up from her nap because he said that she missed the girl scouts who came around last year, and had to go a whole year without.

With about half of our neighbors at home, and only going to our side of the block (leaving the other side for the girl scout who lives across the street), my daughter sold 28 boxes of cookies in an hour!  The next day, my son announced in his high school classes that his sister was selling girl scout cookies, and she received another 58 orders from his friends and his teachers!

I’m absolutely amazed at how easy this is!  It’s an especially big relief to me, because I’m a first year girl scout leader, with eight little brownies under my wing, and I want them all to feel proud of their cookie selling efforts.  At this rate, I’m sure that they will.

If you’re not lucky enough to have a girl scout in your neighborhood, you’ll have another chance to feed your cookie habit.

Site Sales

On March 2nd, girl scout cookie site sales begin, which means you’ll see girl scouts posted outside WalMarts, Albertson’s and other stores throughout the county, with boxes of cookies ready to sell on site.  This ends on March 18th, so you’ll want to stock up before then, or you’ll have to wait all year for the next cookie drive.

Operation Thin Mint®

San Diego has a unique claim-to-fame that you may not be aware of: Opertion Thin Mint® started right here (and has now reached across the nation).  Since 2002, local Girl Scouts and their customers have teamed up to send 825,002 boxes of cookies and thousands of handwritten notes to grateful U.S. military troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East, Japan, Korea, and elsewhere.

If you’d like to send cookies to the military troops, you can place your order with the girl scouts who come to your door, or give the money to any girl scout that you see at site sales.  (You’ll receive a receipt, because your donation is tax deductible.)

If you’d like to send a note of thanks to the troops, there’s a that you can download, or you can use your own stationery.  Deliver your note to any girl scout or the in Balboa Park, Escondido, Carlsbad or El Centro.

On Saturday, May 12th, you can join San Diego and other VIPS aboard to celebrate sending Operation Thin Mint® cookies and notes to military troops.  This free ceremony will conclude with a helicopter liftoff of all Girl Scouts who sold 2,007 boxes of cookies.
