It’s Day 100 at the San Diego Zoo and the Baby Panda is Precious!

by Carole A. Lane on November 26th, 2007

BabyPandaExam2007The San Diego Zoo has the largest number of giant pandas in the United States.

In appreciation of the community’s continued support of the giant panda conservation program, the San Diego Zoo asked its visitors to suggest a name for the female giant panda cub, born August 3, 2007, when visiting the Giant Panda Research Station between October 5 and 14.

Suggestions were reviewed by the Zoo’s Giant Panda Team, comprised of keepers, veterinarians, scientists, and others. The selected names were then submitted to the Chinese Wildlife Conservation Association. The approved names in Chinese (pinyin) all have English translations that you can review below.

The finalists

Name

Meaning

Pronunciation

Li Hua Beautiful China lee hua
Ming Zhu Bright Treasure ming jew
Zhen Zhen Precious jun jun
Xiao Li Little Beauty sea-ou lee

The name receiving the most votes in their global online poll was revealed today, on day 100, following Chinese tradition, at a naming ceremony at the San Diego Zoo’s Hunte Amphitheater.

According to zoo officials, Zhen Zhen  (meaning “Precious”) won out over 2,400 names submitted by zoo visitors. Thirty-six percent of voters chose the name from among the four finalists.

The cub is still living out of public view in a private den with her mother, the panda Bai Yun, but can be seen via the zoo’s Panda Cam

All cubs born to the Giant Pandas in the San Diego Zoo remain property of the Chinese Government, so they won’t be with us forever. We will have the pleasure of watching Zhen Zhen grow up here in San Diego until her third birthday, when she will be sent to China to find a mate within their breeding program.
