In Celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Susan G. Komen for the Cure San Diego Announces Opportunities for San Diegans to Get Involved in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
In honor of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the San Diego Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure encourages San Diegans to participate in a number of local events. Through these events, supporters of Susan G. Komen for the Cure can help the organization in its mission to eradicate breast cancer forever and promote breast cancer awareness in San Diego County.
“We encourage all San Diegans to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month events during the month of October,” said Angie Thieman, president of Susan G. Komen for the Cure San Diego. “Proceeds from all Susan G. Komen for the Cure events held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month benefit the foundation and help us carry out our mission to increase breast cancer education, screening and treatment in San Diego. The contributions and involvement from local community members are what allow us to provide San Diegans with the research and education programs necessary to continue the fight against breast cancer.”

San Diego’s own Gracie apparel will highlight a
Fashion show and Luncheon to benefit breast cancer awareness on Friday, Oct. 12, at The Santaluz Club, 8170 Caminito Santaluz East, in San Diego. The third annual limited-seating event at the private golf club is open to non-members and raises funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The event also will include a courtyard boutique with fashions from Gracie, Childish Couture and Bimala bridal jewelry. Tickets are $75 for general seating and $100 for runway seating. The University of San Diego volleyball team will join all the schools in the West Coast Conference in the “Dig for the Cure” initiative to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation, dedicated to funding breast cancer research. Torero volleyball players will gather pledges and will raise money for every dig recorded on October 20th, 2007 when USD hosts the Gonzaga University Bulldogs at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion in a 1 p.m. match. All proceeds raised in the event will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
On October 20-21, 2007, the Sixth Annual Charity Survivor Crop 2007, a 24-hour scrapbooking marathon, sponsored by Ever After Scrapbook Store, will take place from 10 a.m. on Saturday to 10 a.m. on Sunday. Participants will
settle in for the 24 hours of scrapbooking. During that time, they will work on their scrapbooks, and compete in themed events like best decorated island, best island theme and best name tag. In the end, the Ultimate Island and the Ultimate Survivor will be determined by who has collected the most in donations. The minimum contribution to join the event is $125, plus a minimum donation of $100.00 per person. All community members are invited to attend the event. The “Survivor Crop for the Cure” will take place at the Quantum Learning Network in Oceanside.
“The Charity Survivor Crop is a unique opportunity to help raise money for breast cancer awareness,” said Sheila Goldsberry, Survivor Crop Chair. “Last year we had 180 participants who raised more than $50,000. We plan to continue to grow in participants and raising funds for this great cause.”

Make a date to stop by Ever After Scrapbook Store and bid on some of the wonderful items Ever After will have at their 2nd Annual Think Pink Silent Auction. They’ll start the bidding on Monday, October 22nd. The auction bidding will close at Survivor Crop. They raised nearly $2,000 last year between the auction and the pink ribbon raffle. You can also purchase a pink ribbon card for just $5 (all proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and towards the grand total fundraising amount for Survivor Crop 2007).
in Escondido is hosting “Fashion for the Cure®,” a benefit for the San Diego Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, October 21 at Westfield North County, Escondido. At the event, you’ll save 10% on all purchases and Coldwater Creek will donate 10% of the sales to our local Komen Affiliate.

On October 28, 2007, the University of California, San
Diego (UCSD) rowing team, along with Komen for the Cure San Diego, will host its Sixth Annual “Row for the Cure(R)” at North Ski Beach on Mission Bay from 6 — 11 a.m. Rowers and kayakers of all ages and skill levels will participate in timed races, and prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each category. Participants are encouraged to raise pledge money to benefit Komen for the Cure San Diego, and all community members are invited to attend the event. The cost to participate is $25 per individual.
“Breast cancer is a disease that has affected the families of several of our team members in recent years,” said UCSD rowing coach and “Row for the Cure” coordinator, Pattie Pinkerton. “As a team, we wanted to find a way for the San Diego water sports community to support Komen for the Cure San Diego in their fight against breast cancer. So, six years ago we launched Row for the Cure. Since then we’ve raised more than $80,000 for Komen for the Cure San Diego, and at the same time we’ve gotten the community involved in a cause that is very near and dear to us.”

Komen San Diego Race for the Cure(R) is San Diego County’s largest race supporting local breast cancer education and awareness. This year’s co-ed 5K (3.1 miles) run will be held in Balboa Park on November 4, 2007. Families participating in Race for the Cure can
also include their children in this year’s Race with Kids for the Cure. Kids for the Cure encourages families to educate children ages 12 and under about breast cancer awareness by allowing their children to join the thousands of expected Race participants in this year’s Race for the Cure. In addition, San Diegans that cannot attend the Race for the Cure can participate in Sleep In for the Cure, an opportunity provided by Komen San Diego that allows people to donate to Komen for the Cure San Diego and receive a Race for the Cure T-shirt without attending the Race. The costs for Race for the Cure, Kids for the Cure and Sleep In for the Cure are $27, $15 and $27 respectively.
Knit for the Cure®, the annual knitting project, benefiting the San Diego Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been launched for 2007. Participants will donate all colors of knitted and crocheted items including hats, sweaters, scarves, booties, shawls, slippers, lap robes, mittens, baby blankets and even scarves for dogs! These items will be available for sale, reasonably priced, at the Knit for the Cure booth at the 2007 Komen San Diego Race for the Cure on Sunday, November 4, in Balboa Park. The 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk will take place November 9-11 in San Diego. Registered walkers must be at least 16 years old on the date the event commences. In order to participate in the 60-mile walk, walkers agree to pay the $90 registration fee and raise a minimum of $2,200 for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. Please note that registration fees and all donations are non-refundable and non-transferable. All walkers must have medical insurance at the time of the event in order to participate.
