Honors for San Diego’s Tony Gwynn

by Carole A. Lane on July 25th, 2007

San Diego’s own Tony Gwynn will be honored today by the county of San Diego, and on Sunday, by the world of baseball at Cooperstown, NY.

County officials have teamed up with Cox Communications to create a 35 foot high by 40 foot wide No. 19 Padres baseball jersey, which will be unveiled at 1:30 this afternoon when it’s installed atop the County Administration Center in downtown San Diego. It will face west toward San Diego Bay and be visible to passing ships and those along Harbor Drive.

Baseball Hall of Fame Honors

This is just a prelude to the great honor being bestowed upon Tony Gwynn this weekend. On Sunday, Gwynn will be welcomed into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, with a plaque stating the following:

Anthony Keith “Tony” Gwynn
San Diego Padres, N.L., 1982-2001
— A .338 career batting average, the highest of any
player since Ted Williams.
— His eight National League batting titles, which
equals the number collected by Honus Wagner and is
surpassed only by Ty Cobb, who won 12.
— His 3,141 career hits make Gwynn one of just 26
players in the 3,000-hit club.
— In the strike-shortened season in 1994 he batted
.394, the highest average since Williams hit .406 in
1941.
— He was a 15-time All-Star.
— He won Seven Silver Slugger Awards and five Gold
Glove Awards.
— He made two World Series appearances, where he
compiled a .371 batting average.

Cal Ripken, Jr. will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday. Up to 50,000 fans are expected to be in Cooperstown to attend the ceremony for these two baseball legends, including a contingent of 30 SDSU staff. The ceremony will follow a full weekend of festivities.
