Finding Your Way Around San Diego County
If you’re new around here or just visiting, you’re bound to get lost - and it’s not your fault. It seems that they used every imaginable combination of the words:
- del
- mira
- mar
- via
- camino
- rio
- linda
- mesa
- rancho
- vista
to name so many of the streets around the county, it’s easy to get them all mixed up.
Not only that, some of our communities sprang up from avocado or orange groves, which were later cut up parcel by parcel, placing houses and streets somewhat haphazardly, so it can be difficult to figure out where the driveways end and streets begin.
Then there are streets that change names from city to city, even when you haven’t made a turn.
Add to all of that the way that the same name can be used for a Street, Lane, Drive, Circle, Avenue and Boulevard, and they may all cross each other!
If you find yourself driving in circles around San Diego county, take some consolation in the fact that it’s not uncommon, and don’t be embarrassed about stopping to ask for directions. In fact, I heartily recommend purchasing a GPS system to find your way around, as you’ll probably need to drive most places. (Our limited public transit is not convenient for getting everywhere.)
Most hotels come with complementary Internet access, so you can go online to obtain directions before heading out, but La Jolla Shores Hotel goes one better. They are now supplying GPS units for their guests’ convenience, pre-programmed with the local tourist attractions. The Regency Spa at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego also supplies GPS watches for guests who want to exercise outside.
I hope that more businesses and hotels will follow this trend. A GPS system can make travel around San Diego county much more fun and relaxing.
