Finding Cheap(er) Gas

by Carole A. Lane on July 11th, 2007

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA We all know that San Diego gas prices are high.  They typically run a dime or so higher than other California counties, and significantly higher than most of the country.

Google is now offering a bit of help. They just announced today that you can use Google Maps to find the cheapest gas prices near you.

How it Works

If you go to Google Maps and then click on the My Maps tab, you’ll find a new list of mapping options. Click on the box next to Gas Prices from GasBuddy.com, which will open up an option box. Just type in your zip code and hit the Find Gas Prices button. A bunch of little icons will appear on the map surrounding your area. Click on any of them to find the name and location of a gas station, along with the current price at that station.

A quick check of my area revealed prices ranging from $3.01 to $3.16 within a few short blocks, so it was worth a few minutes online before heading out to fill up.

j0399397 Google isn’t claiming to decrease the local gas prices, but at least you can be sure that you’re not buying from the most expensive pump in the county, and isn’t it better to reward those stations with lower prices?
