Famous San Diegans
San Diego has an interesting relationship with celebrity. Although
we live in California and have been the site for over 500 movies and television programs (e.g. Top Gun, Some Like it
Hot, Citizen Kane, The Sands of Iwo Jima, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Traffic, Almost Famous, etc.), we’re not exactly mainstream Hollywood.
We’re still excited when celebrities come to town, and revere them as hometown heroes when they live here.
Are you famous? I’m famous!
When I wrote my first book, I enjoyed a bit of celebrity, appearing on various television and radio shows. When a film crew showed up at my home and set up a shoot outside, looking into my home office window, I was the talk of the cul-de-sac and everyone made a big fuss over me.
And now I’m not.
A few short days later, the twins up the street got their first Sears catalog job. A couple of days after that, the little boy across the street got a small part in The Tiger Woods Story, filming in San Diego. I was such old news in the neighborhood, I’m surprised they even remembered my name!
I know people. Do you?
Being Californians, we sit on the fringe of the entertainment industry. Even if we’re not famous, many of us know people who know people.
For example, in my last house, I had a neighbor who used to date a very famous country singer. We were also one step removed from Ren & Stimpy. I now live near an artist who creates monsters for movies. (Halloween is pretty fun around here.) Is there a famous San Diegan in your neighborhood?
There are celebrities like Dr. Seuss, Wyatt Earp and Deepak Chopra who’ve made their homes in San Diego county. There are others that
we like to brag about who came from here (Junior Seau, Mario Lopez, etc.). There are some whose names you’ll recognize, and others you might not.
This is the beginning of a series in which I’ll profile famous San Diegans from time to time, so that we can all get to know them better. They’re our home-town-heroes, and we’re very proud of them.
