Do Beach and Booze Mix?

by Carole A. Lane on October 13th, 2008

Cerveca by the PlayaFor decades a debate has waged over whether or not to allow alcohol on San Diego’s beaches. If you ever watched an episode of Beach Patrol: San Diego, you’d understand why. Drunks seem to take up more of the beach officers’ time than anything else, and the beach brawl last Labor Day didn’t help.

This November, San Diegans will weigh in on how they feel about this issue when it appears on their ballots as Proposition D.

If you’re undecided on this issue, you can read the argument for Proposition D from Safe Beaches San Diego, and the argument against it from San Diego Safe Beach Coalition.

Both organizations are also accepting donations and volunteers, so feel free to join whichever side you feel strongly about and make your voice heard.

The beach/bays/park alcohol ban is just another thing that is being banned in California. Do you like being told what to do? Do you like the dictatorship government we have all allowed to take over our lives? What happen to freedom which this great nation is known for? An all out blanket ban is not what we need for this city. Many tourists and locals come to the beaches/bays/parks. They like to be able to enjoy a cup of wine watching the sunset or drink a beer while relaxing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. We ask that of course you do it responsibly though.

    Some real solutions:
Holiday Ban - this is when most problems happen
Make certain areas of the beach where you can drink
    Double the fines

    Facts:
    DUI’s are up
    Crime is up
    Businesses are down
Tourists are down - during spring break Mike Aguirre wrote a letter to all colleges in other surrounding states about the alcohol ban. DUMB let them figure out after they spent the money.
Trash at 4th of July 2008 was up. 2007 - 200 tons of trash 1 million people, 2008 - 150 tons of trash 50% less people. 50% less people but almost as much trash as when there was a ban. It’s not the ban it’s the people. We already have litter laws.
Over 30 laws on the books for alcohol - Why do we need one more? Enforce our current laws.

If vote YES then the ban becomes permanent. If you vote NO then it will be legal to drink on the beach and it will force the city council to come up with some real solutions.

Prop D is nothing short of class warfare. The wealthy beachfront property owners want to keep San Diegans who don’t have the money to live at the beach off their beaches. They want to create their own Malibu with restricted beach access and privileges right here in San Diego. Don’t let them get away with it. Councilmen Faulconer and Peters are taking their money and doing their bidding. They don’t care about the rest of San Diego. They used the Labor Day “riot” of 2007 as their own Reichstag Fire as a pretext to discredit their opposition and consolidate their power. This tactic was used by the Nazis in 1934. Don’t allow this to happen in 21st Century America! Vote for freedom, liberty, and the American Way. Vote NO on D on November 4.

I have visited the beaches of San Diego for 17 years. In those 17 years I usually have to leave the beach around 3:00 in the afternoon due to the drunks on the beach getting obnoxious. They leave trash, urinated, leave their trash because they forget to pick up. It’s hard to witness a beautiful beach get trashed with drugged up people that have no one cutting their booze off. You can see the underage drinking in excess. I hope san diego gets the beaches up to par with the rest of California.

    Good Luck
