Did You Hear That?
At approximately 12:46 PST today, I heard two quick, loud bangs that sounded like large rocks hitting my garage. I ran outside to see what it was, and found my neighbor outside, wondering the same thing.
The first thought that crossed my mind was shelling at the marine base, but it was too loud, too near.
A couple of minutes later, we got our answer when a friend called and suggested it was the space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere.
I thought that the shuttle had been delayed, and hadn’t realized that it was being diverted to the Mohave Desert due to weather conditions. Frankly, even if I’d known all of that, I wouldn’t have expected that we’d be able to hear the sonic boom here in San Diego county.
I checked the news, and sure enough, the timing was right. Atlantis landed at approximately 12:49 local time.

I remember the “booms” in the 1970s before they were outlawed. It must have been a strange noise.

It was very loud and unexpected, but you’re right, it was like something I heard as a kid too.
