Celebrate our Samoan Brothers and Sisters

by Carole A. Lane on July 7th, 2008

Did you know that Oceanside is home to one of the largest Samoan populations in the United States? It makes sense then that the Samoan Cultural Celebration would be centered here in our North County, doesn’t it?

The Samoan Cultural Celebration is a week-long faith-based sports and family event that has traditionally coincided with the 4th of July, but this year was pushed back a few days at the request of the City of Oceanside. The festival  started yesterday (July 6) with an Opening Prayer Service at Melba Bishop Recreation Center.

The celebration will continue today with a softball tournament at Melba Bishop Park, and tonight a family night with social activities is planned there.

Tuesday and Wednesday, a basketball competition for middle and high school youths will be held at the center.

On Thursday, the fun will continue with a volleyball tournament including both men’s and women’s teams. All-stars from Oceanside and North County, as well as those from high schools and colleges in San Diego, Long Beach and Temecula will compete.

There will be a Youth and Family faith-based Outreach at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater on Friday.

On Saturday, a youth football camp will be held for children ages 8 to 14 at El Camino High School. Then the celebration will finish at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater, with food, drinks and entertainment.

Here’s a little taste of last year’s entertainment:

They sound great, don’t they?
