Runners who expect to finish after 4.5 hours will start their run.

7:00 a.m. – Noon The Health and Fitness Expo will be open in a 20,000-square foot “big top” in the southwest corner of the Plaza Camino Real shopping center.  In addition to apparel and equipment for sale, the Expo promises interactive displays, samples, guest speakers, seminars and celebrities.

7:30 a.m. Half Marathon and Marathon Start
Vivian Reed will sing the national anthem again.
Both the Marathon and the Half Marathon start at the same time, but the courses diverge.  All full and half marathon participants starting at 7:30 must be able to maintain a 16-minute-mile pace or faster throughout the event.

Half Marathon: The Carlsbad Half Marathon (at 13.1 miles) was named one of the top 25 half marathons in the U.S. by Runners World Magazine, and is recognized as one of the fastest and most scenic races of that distance.  It is one third of the Half Marathon Triple Crown, which also includes the La Jolla Half Marathon (in April) and the America’s Finest City Half Marathon (in August).  Registration for the half marathon closed when registrations reached 7000 this year; additional half marathon runners and walkers were turned away for the first time.

Marathon: The Carlsbad Marathon (formerly the San Diego Marathon) is the second-oldest marathon on the West coast.  It represents a merger of San Diego’s two marathons, the Heart of San Diego and the San Diego Track Club’s Mission Bay Marathon.  In 1990 In Motion took over ownership of the merged races and moved the Marathon to Carlsbad in North San Diego County where it continues today.  Over 1500 participants have registered for the full marathon.

10:30 a.m. Full marathoners must reach mile 16 by this point, or they will be redirected north to the finish line.

11 a.m. Anyone taking the 6:30 a.m. early marathon start and finishing well under 4 ½ hours is subject to disqualification.

Noon - Participants who reach the intersection of Carlsbad Boulevard and Carlsbad Village Drive (approximately mile 24) at or after 12 p.m. will be redirected to the finish line via an alternate route using the sidewalk and will be considered pedestrians.

      asmelash -
I don’t know if you’re local, but if you are, you know that there are a BUNCH of marathons in San Diego County each year (the latest being the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon).
Maybe you should contact the organizers of the next event for some advice. I think a marathon would be a great place for you to make some contacts. The running coaches from the local colleges might also be able to advise you.
      Best of luck to you.
