British Markets Coming to San Diego

by Carole A. Lane on July 8th, 2007

4A1W1069 Tesco, the British grocery chain, is planning on opening their first seven stores in San Diego County by the end of the year. The company currently operates 1,779 grocery stores in the UK. They operate in 12 additional markets outside the UK, in Europe and Asia. Tesco also operates a wide range of non-food stores.

Tesco’s San Diego stores will be called Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets, and will be similar in size to a Trader Joe’s, stocking approximately 3000 items. There will be an emphasis on low prices, quality meat and produce, and reaching Hispanic customers.

This does not represent Tesco’s first entry into the U.S. market. In 2002, in a partnership with Safeway, they launched online grocery service in many areas of the U.S.

The Fresh & Easy market locations will include:

  • Campo & Kenwood, Casa de Oro
  • East H & Tierra del Ray, Chula Vista
  • Valley & Ash, Escondido
  • Main & Ammunition, Fallbrook
  • Catalina & Cannon, Point Loma
  • Lake Murray & Navajo, San Diego
  • East Vista Way & Williamston St., Vista
