Bird Lovers Needed
The San Diego Audubon Society (SDAS) is seeking volunteers to help the California Least Tern.
On Saturday (March 31), from 9am - noon, the SDAS will kick off a two-year project to enhance the D Street Nesting Site, in the South San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, in Chula Vista.
Volunteers will start by removing small and medium-sized invasive trees and shrubs (primarily acacia and tamarisk) that predators use to perch when preying upon California Least Tern chicks.
If you’d like to assist in this project, contact Chris Redfern (619) 682-7211. Plan to arrive by 9am and bring a hand saw and/or large loppers. Wear old clothes, particularly a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, eye protection, a hat, and sturdy shoes, and don’t forget your sunscreen. Refreshments will be served, but no restrooms are available, so please plan accordingly.
Directions to the D Street Nesting Site: From I-5 exit Mile of Cars/Bay Marina Drive and turn west. Turn left on Harrison Ave and park along Harrison. Meet at the entrance of the bike path located on the east side of Harrison as it dead ends into 32nd Street.
For other volunteer opportunities, or to donate to the SDAS, please visit their website.
