Bicycles Reach Critical Mass in San Diego
If you’re ever in San Diego on a Friday night and see hundreds (maybe thousands) of bikes riding through the streets all at once, you may be wondering what the heck’s going on. Rightly so, and even those who are riding along with the crowd may not be able to explain why.
It’s Critical Mass. This event is held on the last Friday of every month in cities around the world. Bicyclists and other self-propelled commuters take to the streets en masse at a pre-appointed time and place, and just ride. Some say it’s to draw attention to the treatment of bicyclists. Others explain it as a celebration of cycling, or an assertion of cyclists’ rights. Still others would call it a form of street theater.
Whatever the reason, Critical Mass took place tonight through the streets of the Gaslamp, to the amazement and amusement of the Comic-Con crowd.
If you’d like to join Critical Mass in San Diego, there’s a group that meets near the Plaza de Balboa fountain in Balboa Park, near the Ruben H. Fleet Center at 6:30pm on the last Friday of each month. For more information see Critical Mass - San Diego or Critical-Mass.info.
