Best Employers in San Diego County

by Carole A. Lane on September 25th, 2007

j0172639 Working Mother magazine has again named Scripps Health one of the best employers in the country for working mothers, as part of their “100 Best Companies” list.

Scripps was praised for a “flextime” program used by one-quarter of its 9,752 employees (7,502 of which are women) in their five local hospitals. In addition, employees receive benefits if they work at least 18 hours a week.  Two on-site child-care centers with discounted fees also help parents balance work and family responsibilities.

New moms can take up to seven months of job-guaranteed time off, with six weeks at full pay and ten weeks at partial pay. Dads and adoptive parents receive one week of paid leave. When moms are ready to return to work, they can arrange a transitional schedule that fits their needs.

Former staffers become part of an alumni network and receive regular updates about job opportunities. Those who resign and return within one year are reinstated with their former benefits.

San Diego Magazine also notes the following honors:

“Scripps Mercy Medical Group has been consecutively rated as the No. 1 medical group for overall care in San Diego County by the California Cooperative Healthcare Reporting Initiative (2002-2005). • Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas became North County’s first certified primary stroke center (2006). • Scripps Green Hospital was named one of the “100 Top Hospitals” by Solucient (2005, 2004). • Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla became San Diego’s first Magnet hospital, recognized by the American Nurses Association (2005). “

The current issue of AARP the Magazine, also being released today, names Scripps one of the 50 best employers in the country for workers older than 50. According to AARP:

“This year marks the third time Scripps has landed in our Top 10. The secret behind this consistently high performance? Scripps surveys its employees and acts on their suggestions for improvement. One recent result: a new tax-free retiree health account, which allows employees to save pretax dollars that won’t be taxed later if used for health care expenses in retirement.”

Among the other companies on Working Mother magazine’s list with local operations include:

  • Hewlett-Packard, whose Imaging and Printing group is based in San Diego
  • Intel, which has a field service office in the city
  • Ernst and Young LLP, which has offices in downtown San Diego and Carlsbad

Still looking for your next job? Last year, the Palomar Pomerado Health district was named as the best employer in the county by the Society of Human Resource Management. They won because of its employee-recognition program, educational/training programs and collaborative teams of employees that helped design the new hospitals the district is building.

San Diego Magazine also bestowed its own “best employer” on Palomar Pomerado Health. Here’s the rest of their Best Places to Work list.
