Behind the Scenes of 3:10 to Yuma
On Thursday, Ben Foster (X-Men: The Last Stand) and Peter Fonda (Ghost Rider) brought a special preview of the upcoming Lionsgate film, 3:10 to Yuma, to Comic-Con here in San Diego. The film is directed by James Mangold and also stars Christian Bale and Russell Crowe.
A film trailer (it doesn’t appear to be the exact same one we saw, but you’ll still get a great feeling for the film) can now be found on YouTube:
When asked about his experience on this film, Foster said, “You go on a killing spree across the desert to save Russell Crowe and I’d say you’re having a really good four months!” He talked about spending time on Georgia O’Keefe’s ranch during the shoot, and said that it’s haunted. They shot for 42 days.
When Academy Award winner, Peter Fonda joined him on the dais, Fonda started out by reminding the audience not to buy or drink from plastic bottles. He then talked about the western genre as a good way of talking about the past and relating it to the present.
Fonda was asked if this was his first time at Comic-Con and he said that it was, but he indicated that he was comfortable here, as he did make the cover of MADD Magazine’s “Sleazy Rider” edition.
Fonda described 3:10 to Yuma as a family dynamic…a family torn apart.
When asked about their experience shooting, Foster talked about the cold, and how Russell Crowe would give them hand warmers 20 minutes before their shooting scenes so that their hands could move. The ground was actually covered with snow, so tons of dirt had to be placed over the snow to make it look right. He emphasized the difference between real outlaws and actors playing outlaws with little hand warmers.
Fonda described his experience as “hours of waiting, punctuated by moments of sheer terror.”
Asked about his process in creating the characters that we see on screen, Fonda said that the wardrobe plays a very vital role in his process. He needs the clothes first and then he fills the clothes with the character.
The film is expected in theatres on September 7.
