Art in the Moment
The 28th Annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition will take place next Sunday (July 13) in Imperial Beach, and you’ve probably never seen sandcastles like these! In fact, every year brings something new and unexpected.
Sandcastle Days will kick off on Friday (July 11), with the Mayor’s Community Breakfast in the morning, and the Sandcastle Days Kickoff Dance in the evening. Saturday (July 12) will feature a day-long celebration of Imperial Beach’s 52nd Birthday, a street fair, and the Kids ‘n Kastles Competition. On Sunday, the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition goes into full gear, followed by the awards ceremony at 4pm.
Don’t expect to come by later to see the winners though. Directly after the contest, the local children start romping through the exhibits, and what they don’t take, the waves will. To see these amazing but temporary artworks, come early, and watch the sand sculptors at work.
