23rd Annual Philippine Cultural Arts Festival This Weekend

by Carole A. Lane on August 8th, 2007

ed6705f1 If you come down to Balboa Park this weekend, you’ll be treated to a showcase of traditional performing arts from the Philippines at the annual Philippine Cultural Arts Festival. This event is organized by the SAMAHAN Philippine Dance Company.

ed6707ac Visitors will enjoy free performances by colorful folk dancers from various regions of the Philippines, as well as folk songs, and Rondalla and Kulintang music of the Southern Philippines. Examples of Rondalla music can be found at the Philippine Information Agency site. A great deal of information about Kulintang is available on Wikipedia.

ed67064cEach day the Festival program starts with presentations of traditional Philippine music and dances performed by the highly skilled and youthful dancers and students of Samahan.

There will be Martial Arts exhibitions, and raffle  prizes too.

The festival also features a cultural exhibit and crafts booths displaying Philippine shellcraft, fans, embroideries, assorted handicrafts and musical instruments.

ed67061dDelicious, popular Filipino food including adobo (chicken or pork or both, cooked with vinegar, soy sauce, crushed garlic, bay leaf and peppercorns, and sometimes whole peppers), lumpia (pastries similar to spring rolls), pancit (stir-fried noodles), and more will also be available at the festival.

On both Saturday and Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., there will be presentation of mainstream entertainment by young Filipino-Americans from San Diego County and  Southern California. A major part of this section will be a singing talent show, hip-cast_jelynnhop, jazz dance, and other variety numbers by invited Asian and Pacific Islander artists. Invited emcee for the mainstream entertainment is Rancho Bernardo’s own Jelynn Rodriquez, long-time dancer with Samahan who is now an actress, recording artist, dancer and host of “The Drop” on the cable network Si TV.

While you’re at Balboa Park, why not stop by the House of Philippines for more Philippine history and culture?
