The Mafia in San Diego?
That’s right! I turned on the TV yesterday and was surprised to hear that the San Diego Mafia is active, out in public, and has familial connections to other Mafiosa across the country, with a separate branch in Oceanside!
The San Diego Craft Mafia appeared yesterday on Uncommon Threads (on diy network). Yes, Craft Mafia. (Shocking, isn’t it!)
The first Craft Mafia was founded in 2003 by nine crafty businesswomen in Austin, Texas. According to their website:
“The group originally came together through a shared love for craft, DIY ethics and mutual respect. As the Craft Mafia developed it became a forum for networking, promotion and shared ideas. Since it’s development in Austin, other Mafias have popped up across the globe, check them out!”
Penni Hawkins, Nicole Yost, Mandy Jouan, and Tess Lee represented the San Diego Craft Mafia on Wednesday’s Uncommon Threads, demonstrating their techniques for making a glittery Anarchy Patch, and a Punk Purse made from a crazy quilt and vinyl. They also showed off an assortment of very punked out Sock Monkeys. Uncommon Threads called this the Punk Party episode (DUCT-221).
To learn more about the San Diego (North Park) Craft Mafia and their upcoming events, go to their website, visit their MySpace page, or shop at their cafepress store. If you’re in North County, check out the Oceanside Craft Mafia.
If you’re a crafter, wouldn’t you just love to have a group like this to share your talents with? You could become part of the familia, so get connected!
