DEVO Rocks the Race Track
Seventies new wave band DEVO appeared last night on the infield of the Del Mar Race Track, and they rocked the place!
Although not quite as hyper as in their heyday, DEVO sounded just as good, and were every bit as entertaining.
The concert started with an instructive film on dressing for a DEVO concert – very helpful. Then the band appeared onstage in the little red fire hydrant hats that we know them by and performed one hit after another, including Whip It (of course), Girl U Want, Freedom of Choice, Peek-a-Boo!, That’s Good, Gut Feeling, Gates of Steel, Secret Agent Man, and Mongoloid. It looked like the band was having as much fun as the audience, many of whom were not even alive when DEVO was BIG.
Between hit songs, DEVO first lost their hats, and later their yellow jumpsuits, leaving the band members in black t-shirts and shorts, with black and white kneepads. Hot!
When they asked us, “Are we not men?” we all knew what to answer:
WE ARE DEVO!
D-E-V-O
In the end, the screen reappeared, with another vintage DEVO mini-film, saluting the end of a great day.
Just when I thought it was all over, the band came back and announced the arrival of a very special guest – you guessed it – Booji Boy! His rendition of Beautiful World was delightful, and a fitting end to a beautiful DEVO concert and my day at the races.
The English Beat will give the last summer concert at the Del Mar Races this Wednesday. I hope it’s as much fun as this concert was. DEVO is quite an act to follow! Photo credits: Carole A. Lane
