SDSU Addressing Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Day 37 - Drinking buddiesFor the next five weeks, SDSU will sponsor alcohol-free dances, movies, concerts and other student activities, while banning alcohol at fraternity and sorority parties; however, these are not the only the only step SDSU is taking to address alcohol abuse.

As you may recall, Operation Sudden Fall, which occurred last year, was SDSU’s largest drug bust, causing many to ask what SDSU is doing to address alcohol and drug abuse among its students. (Two fraternities, Theta Chi and Phi Kappa Psi, remain on interim suspension as a result of Operation Sudden Fall.)

Another new policy bars students from joining a sorority or fraternity if they are on disciplinary probation for drug or alcohol offenses. New pledges will also have to complete the new Pre-Recruitment Educational Program, which involves viewing a PowerPoint presentation covering alcohol, drugs, hazing and sexual conduct, followed by a quiz. It also explains the dangers of mixing alcohol with drugs.

Three fraternities , Lambda Chi Alpha, Delta Sigma Phi and Sigma Pi, were expelled in May for alcohol violations, hazing or both.

Although these changes all make sense, does anyone really think that SDSU keggers will now become sing-a-longs with hot cocoa? It seems unlikely.

No matter what any university does I just don’t think you will be able to ever control alcohol in college. trying to ban it might actually make things even worse

You’re probably right, GSDC. We all remember prohibition, right?
