National Night Out

National_Night_Out_Flyer_08[1] National Night Out, the first Tuesday of August each year, is an evening to bring heightened awareness to crime and drug prevention, strengthen neighborhoods and sheriff community partnerships. This evening is also intended to send a message to criminals by letting them know that communities are organized and fighting back.

Santee Mayor Randy Voepel will be speaking at Santee’s National Night Out. Numerous booths will provide information concerning free children’s fingerprinting, crime prevention and cyber bullying. There will also be demonstrations from the K-9 Unit, Fire Department and Healthy Adventures.

Other cities around San Diego county will be commemorating National Night Out in their own ways. For example:

  • Vista’s 6th Annual Walk Against Crime will be held at 5:30 tomorrow night in downtown Vista as part of 2008 National Night Out.
  • Oceanside’s National Night Out Against Crime will be held at John Landes, Joe Balderrama and Melba Bishop Recreation Centers. Call (760) 435-5529 for more information.
  • Expect classic cars, great music, vendors, and hundreds of people in Chula Vista to enjoy the annual event at Memorial Park.

From 7 to 10pm, residents throughout San Diego and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout San Diego host a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities, and anti-crime and drug rallies.

The City of San Diego has also recognized August as Neighborhood Watch month. If you have any questions concerning National Night Out or Neighborhood Watch, please contact the Neighborhood Policing Resource Team at (619) 531-2211.

This seems like a great event to bring people together. With people busy schedule it will take time to make this work but it is a great idea.

I think it’s growing each year, as more of our communities participate. I love to see grassroots movements like this make a difference in neighborhoods around us.
