A Day at the Races

A Day at the Races

I went to the Del Mar Races yesterday. Were you there? If so, you may have seen me. I was in a little red strapless sundress, with a matching red hat. If you’re one of the many men (or the one woman) who sang “Lady in Red” to me as I walked by, thanks! If you’re one of the men who handed me their phone number, I thank you too. You all made my day!
Admittedly, I may have been overdressed. Before leaving for the races, I checked out “Fashion tips for women who want to look fabulous at …read more

Ballpark Village Hotel Plans Scrapped

Ballpark Village Hotel Plans Scrapped

The Marriott has canceled their plan to build the West Coast’s largest hotel – with 1,929 rooms – at Ballpark Village, just east of Petco Park.
San Diego would have received an estimated $18 million a year in hotel taxes from the project, which would have more than covered the city’s $11 million annual debt payment on the ballpark.
This hotel would have been welcome relief for the larger conventions, such as Comic-Con, which regularly sells out all of the local hotels each year.
It’s unclear whether there are any other developers ready to step in, but if not, how will San …read more

Scrapbook Expo at the Convention Center

Scrapbook Expo at the Convention Center

If you’ve never been to a Scrapbook Expo, it’s a much bigger event than you probably would imagine.
There are dozens of vendors selling thousands of scrapbooking and card-making products, sell-out 1-2 hour workshops, all-day and evening cropping, and lots of make-and-take opportunities.
Crops
Cropping events are scrapbooking parties where people scrapbook next to each other while contests or raffles are held, games may be played, and my favorite part is checking out everyone else’s artwork. Crops will be held throughout the expo:
1.  Friday All Day Crop & Shop (8:00am – 11:30pm)
$40 per person (Reserve a Table for an additional $20 if …read more

Açai Berries Taking Over San Diego?

Açai Berries Taking Over San Diego?

Have you tried açai berries yet?
I was invited to a MonaVie tasting party a couple of weeks ago, and until then, I’d never heard of açai berries (and I’ve even vacationed in the Amazon Jungle!) MonaVie is a juice containing açai berries (from Brazil) and 18 other fruits; the bottles are sold through home-distributors much like Avon.
Today I overhead another mom at my daughter’s tennis class talking about açai berries, and when I got home I noticed Açai: Berry Good for You? in San Diego Magazine, which lists many places offering açai berries throughout San Diego.
I guess it’s official – …read more

SDSU Addressing Alcohol and Drug Abuse

SDSU Addressing Alcohol and Drug Abuse

For the next five weeks, SDSU will sponsor alcohol-free dances, movies, concerts and other student activities, while banning alcohol at fraternity and sorority parties; however, these are not the only the only step SDSU is taking to address alcohol abuse.
As you may recall, Operation Sudden Fall, which occurred last year, was SDSU’s largest drug bust, causing many to ask what SDSU is doing to address alcohol and drug abuse among its students. (Two fraternities, Theta Chi and Phi Kappa Psi, remain on interim suspension as a result of Operation Sudden Fall.)
Another new policy bars students from joining a sorority …read more

Stickball West Coast Invitational

Stickball West Coast Invitational

Watch the streets of Little Italy come alive this weekend (8/30-9/1), with the good ol’ American (East Coast) past-time Stickball! Every year local teams come together to play for the right to call themselves the king of the block. This year’s tournament is an invitational for teams from New York and Puerto Rico to attend.
Stickball emulates baseball, but is played in the street. Buildings, curbs, parking meters, signs and balconies are all playable in fair territory. Bronx rules are applied; no gloves allowed, the batter pitches to himself, and he gets one swing of the stick to hit the rubber …read more

It’s been busy here at the San Diego Traveler, so I haven’t gone trolling for photos on Flickr for a couple of weeks. I decided to remedy that today, and here’s what I found:

It was a great month for capturing some of San Diego’s most beautiful architecture. Of course it bears noting that three of these images were taken in Balboa Park, where you’ll find some of our oldest and most gorgeous structures.
