Garden With the Community

Green ThumbAre you tired of having to pay high prices for produce? Have you been yearning to try out your own green thumb, but lack a garden of your own? If you’re in Escondido, you may be in luck. Escondido is home to one of the most unique gardening programs in the state.

The City of Escondido boasts three community gardens with over 145 garden plots for residents to use:

South Escondido Garden

Cost: $10/yr.

Description:

The garden has 40 plots each with a size of 4′x16′. The garden it equipped with a garden faucet system and includes all necessary garden tools and wheelbarrows. In addition, the garden has one bathroom and monthly green waste removal service.

Escondido Community Garden Garden

West side of Centre City Parkway between El Norte Parkway and Mission Avenue

Cost: $20 for 6 months / $30 for 1 year

Description:

The garden has 80 plots each about 4′x20′. The garden includes a small storage shed, covered cabana sitting area, and picnic tables. Numerous garden faucets are found throughout the garden for watering. The garden also has a bathroom and weekly green waste removal service. The garden also has nighttime lighting.

Senior Garden

Cost: 10/yr.
Open to all Seniors age 55 or older

Description:

The garden has 26 plots each about 16′x16′. The garden includes a small storage shed and all necessary tools to manage your garden plot. In addition, the garden has a bathroom and weekly green waste removal service. The garden also has nighttime lighting.

This Weekend

If you head to Escondido Community Garden on Saturday morning, you can attend a free Composting Workshop. These are held periodically through the year, are staffed by master composters, and include demonstration and instruction in building and maintaining a backyard compost pile and worm bin.
