Operation Thin Mint Sendoff

Each year, Girl Scouts sell cookies to raise money to fund their troops and councils. Since 2002, they have also collected donations for Operation Thin Mint during their cookie sales.
Operation Thin Mint is a nationwide Girl Scouts of America effort, originally spearheaded for the Navy by the Girls Scouts from the San Diego-Imperial Council in 2002. Since that time, San Diego-Imperial Council has sent 1,086,157 boxes of cookies to the troops, and the Operation Thin Mint effort has spread nationwide.

Shark Attack!

Shark Attack!

This morning, 66-year-old retired veterinarian Dave Martin was swimming off the coast of Solana Beach when he was attacked by a shark. It is believed that it was a great white shark that is still on the loose.
After the attack, Dr. Martin was dragged from the water by fellow swimmers, but died from the severe injuries to his legs.
This was a very rare event. In fact, experts say that there are an average of less than five fatal shark attacks per year across the globe, and they’re almost unheard of in San Diego county.

Come Home, Carly

Come Home, Carly

San Diego’s own Carly Smithson delivered her last performance on American Idol this evening. Her rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar made Andrew Lloyd Webber proud, and you can’t ask for more than that.

Carly definitely out-performed some of the other competitors, so why didn’t she get the votes? Perhaps it was the “kiss of death” when Simon said that hers was one of his favorite performances of the night. Could it be her tattoos that kept her from connecting with the largest fan base? Maybe the fans thought she did so well that she was safe, and one of the other …read more

EarthFair 2008

EarthFair 2008

Last weekend’s EarthFair was the largest environmental fair yet. That’s saying a lot, as EarthFair was already billed as:
“The world’s largest annual environmental fair and Earth Day Celebration – produced by volunteers”

Over 300 exhibitors provided the framework for this festival. Some were educational, providing guidance on living greener, minimizing waste, and so on. Included in this group were the Sierra Club and other environmental groups. Children’s activities, such as decorating a paper cup flower pot in order to plant seeded paper, or making paper airplanes, were popular among the younger set. I suppose you could

Celebrate the Earth

Celebrate the Earth

According to Wikipedia, Earth Day began in 1970:
“On April 22, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.”

So how do San Diegans celebrate Earth Day?
