February is Black History Month. If you don’t naturally associate San Diego with black history, you may be surprised that we share a bit of this heritage, which we celebrate in many, many ways here:

January 31 – February 3 – San Diego Black Film Festival  (covered in the linked article).
February 1 – Black History Month Opener, at UCSD Price Center Plaza, featuring inspirational speaker and UCSD Counseling Psychologist, Bill Johnson, and inspirational spoken word artist Rudy Francisco. Step performance by guest fraternity.

Cirque du Soleil Corteo is now at Del Mar Fairgrounds, and will continue until February 16. Corteo, which means “procession” in Italian, is a joyous cortege, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. Celebrating their 5th Anniversary, the San Diego Black Film Festival takes place this year from January 31 – February 3 at Regal United Artists Theatre 14 in Horton Plaza.
The star studded screenings feature actors, Olympic athletes, NBA stars, Hip Hop stars & many more!
The San Diego Black Film Festival, originally known as the Noir Film Festival, was established in 2004 as a yearly fundraiser for the Black Historical Society of San Diego, the largest black historical society in the country.

This weekend, the Cat Fanciers Association brings the Superbowl of Cat Shows to San Diego. Watch as some of the nation’s finest cats vie for top honors at this year’s "Food & Water Bowl" at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Up to 450 exotic cats representing 41 different breeds are expected to participate, and the cat agility competition will be a highlight of the show.

On Friday evening (January 25 from 5-9pm), join the WorldBeat Center for an alternative happy hour. Non-alcoholic drinks and cocktails will be served, along with acupuncture, massage, energy healing, yoga and meditation, and Sene Africa will provide the music.

Olympic athletes now have another reason for coming to San Diego. USA Cycling today opened the new BMX training facility at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. The new track will offer training and competition grounds for some of the top American BMX athletes as they prepare to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games.
