Emergency Shelters in San Diego County

If you’re one of the approximately 250,000 people being evacuated, and looking for a local shelter, please see:

to find a center near you.

If you’re taking your pets with you, the Red Cross asks that you bring them in pet carriers, along with their food.

In order for your loved ones to locate you, if you have Internet access, you can register yourself as “safe and well” on the Red Cross’ Safe and Well List, which is searchable online. If you don’t have Internet access, contact one person outside the fire areas who can convey messages to anyone else necessary, so that you can leave the local phone lines open for emergencies. If you can’t get a phone line out, try text messaging someone outside of the area; text messages can sometimes get out when voice calls can’t.

If you’re trying to find someone who has been evacuated, see the article Finding Loved Ones Who Have Been Evacuated for instructions.

This is Wendy from the American Red Cross. Thanks for mentioning the Safe and Well site.

We’re working on ways for people to use Twitter to register themselves, but we haven’t got all the privacy concerns ironed out yet.

We hope to get these channels into action soon.

    Stay safe.

Thanks, Wendy. That’s good news. I’ll check twitter and add information as soon as I see that it’s been worked out.
