This Weekend in San Diego County (September 15-16)

Wow! What a busy weekend we have ahead of us in San Diego county!  Of course you can start with our local attractions (SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, LegoLand, Balboa Park, Old Town), and it’s not too late to enjoy the beaches, but there’s tons more to do all around the county.
Celebrate Mexican Independence Day at Del Mar Fairgrounds with Festival Del Grito.
A Safari Soiree will be held on Saturday night at the Fallbrook Golf Club, where guests will engage in their own African adventure.
If you need some exercise, why not take part in the 16th Annual San …read more

The Chargers are still deciding between two cities for their new stadium – Oceanside and Chula Vista.

Blade Runner Celebrates 25th Anniversary in San Diego

Blade Runner Celebrates 25th Anniversary in San Diego

Director Ridley Scott and many of the stars of Blade Runner came to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the film, as well as the DVD release, with their loyal fans at Comic-Con this year. No, sadly not Harrison Ford or Rutger Howard, Edward James Olmos or Darryl Hannah.  We were, however, treated to some special time in front of Sean Young, James Hong, Joanna Cassidy, and Joe Turkel, as well as Visual Futurist Syd Mead and Production Designer Lawrence G. Paull, among others.
Warner Bros. Home Video is releasing the 5-disc set of Blade Runner: Final Cut with five versions of the film on DVD. …read more

San Diego Surf Dogs

San Diego Surf Dogs

There are some nifty videos springing up on YouTube showing some of our local talented pooches in the recent Lowes Surf Dog Competition.  Here are a couple of my favorites:

Little Shop of Horrors at the Moonlight

Little Shop of Horrors at the Moonlight

When I received tickets to Little Shop of Horrors, playing at the Moonlight Amphitheatre, I was grateful, but my expectations weren’t high. After all, I had seen this play at the Westwood Playhouse years ago with the original cast (including Ellen Greene, who also stars as Audrey in the 1986 film, and Jesse White – the lonely Maytag Repairman playing Mr. Mushnik). I’m even a fan of the 1960 Roger Corman B-flick on which the play and later musical film are based, so admittedly, I’m a tough audience.

This Weekend in San Diego County (September 8-9)

There’s so much going on around the county this weekend, it’s hard to choose what to do first. You can start with our local attractions (SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, LegoLand, Balboa Park, Old Town), and it’s not too late to enjoy the beaches, but this weekend, there’s so much more!
It’s a wild weekend for animal lovers. The Wiener Dogs are running at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday.  That evening, the Escondido Humane Society will hold their 14th Annual Gala, “Tails at Twilight,” and on  Sunday, head to Del Mar for the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon.

Warner Bros. Home Videos Releases 300

Warner Bros. Home Videos Releases 300

Perhaps not quite as exciting as the other previews of upcoming films seen at Comic-Con this year, Warner Bros. used this forum to announce the Home Video release of a couple of previous hits.
They made a tremendous production of the release of 300, including a preview and panel on Friday afternoon, and an invitation-only screening at Petco Park that evening, with uniformed Spartans and stars in attendance. The other home video being promoted with far less fanfare was a favorite of the Comic-Con crowd, Blade Runner: Final Cut, which I’ll talk about in another post.

Bodies…The Exhibition

Bodies…The Exhibition

In the current heat wave, some great places to stay cool are at the movies, the library, and the museums. Having done my fair share of the first two recently, I decided to spend yesterday at a museum.
San Diego county has a nearly endless variety of museums to choose from, but the first two exhibits that came to mind were the Dead Sea Scrolls and Bodies…The Exhibition. After a quick poll of my family members, we headed out to University Towne Center to see some dead bodies.
What an amazing experience! I’d seen pictures from the exhibit online, but there’s really …read more
