Behind the Scenes of Midnight Meat Train

Behind the Scenes of Midnight Meat Train

Seeing master of horror Clive Barker at Comic-Con should surprise no one. He’s been here 4 or 5 times before. This year he came to promote his newest adventure in terror Midnight Meat Train.
It was the scariest trailer I’ve EVER seen. EVER! (I wish that I could share it with you, but this really was a sneak preview only for the San Diego audience at Comic-Con, and there’s nothing available online yet.)
The premise of Midnight Meat Train starts out pretty straight-forward. Leon, a photojournalist (played by Bradley Cooper) takes pictures of people on trains and realizes that he has pictures of someone who was just reported …read more

Surfing in San Diego

The California Surf Museum has just announced the release of a book by John C. Elwell, Jane Schmauss, and various friends of the museum. Created in association with Arcadia Publishing, Surfing in San Diego highlights the county’s rich surfing history, colorful characters, and innovations from 1907 into the late 1960’s, featuring more than two-hundred vintage photographs.
The book is organized into geographic chapters stretching from the Tijuana Sloughs, north to San Onofre.
Surfing in San Diego is now available through the California Surf Museum and select San Diego surf shops and area bookstores, as well as Arcadia Publishing and Amazon.com. All proceeds …read more

Comic-Con – Day 1

Comic-Con – Day 1

When I posted the video of Preview Night at Comic-Con, the YouTube viewers asked for more. Happy to oblige, here’s Thursday, Day 1 at Comic-Con, 2007:

It was a short day for me, because I stayed home in the morning to see some wonderful old friends visiting from out-of-state. Fortunately, I arrived in time to see some of the stars, film previews, and panels.
I only wish the geniuses at Comic-Con would improve their cloning capabilities so that I could be in several places at once. There’s just so much to see and do!

18th Annual Vista Rod Run Today

18th Annual Vista Rod Run Today

At 9 a.m. today, the 18th Annual Vista Rod Run will take place in Downtown Vista. There you’ll see some of the most beautiful and pristine automobiles you’ll ever encounter, in San Diego or elsewhere. More than 200 vehicles are expected to participate this year.
Here are a few of my favorites from last year’s Rod Run.

Street Scene San Diego Moving Again

Street Scene San Diego Moving Again

Although we’ve been hearing for months that the San Diego Street Scene is moving to the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the venue has been changed again. It’s actually going to the Coors Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, on September 22 & 23.

Slow ticket sales are being blamed for the move, but are you surprised? The Del Mar Races actually seem to have a more exciting concert lineup, with bands like the Violent Femmes, Ziggy Marley  and The Cult.

Birth Announcement at the Zoo!

Birth Announcement at the Zoo!

San Diego has had a love affair with giant pandas ever since Basi and Yuan Yuan first came from China to visit the San Diego Zoo in 1987.
Since then, and after much red tape and tons of paperwork, a 12-year research loan program was negotiated between the zoo and China. Although Basi and Yuan Yuan returned to China, we later received Bai Yun and Shi Shi on September 10, 1996.
