Breakfast at the French Bakery Cafe

French-Bakery-Cafe There are new French Bakeries springing up around town, in Vista, Carlsbad and Del Mar. I’ve been impatiently waiting for the Vista location to open for about a year, as the sign out front said Coming Soon at least that long. When it finally did open, there was little fanfare; it was just open for business one day, and I couldn’t wait to try it.

I made plans to meet a good friend for coffee at the French Bakery Cafe one morning. I was just expecting coffee and pastries.  I found both, but much more.

BakeryThis isn’t just a bakery, this is a breakfast and lunch restaurant, with eggs and omelettes, french toast and pancakes, sandwiches, paninis, quiches, soup and salads, and of course, french pastries. The menu isn’t large, but there are good choices in each category.

Omelet I ordered the Fresh Spinach with Blue Cheese Omelette, which came with some lovely fresh fruit. The omelette was light and prepared well. Everything was delicious. The only problem was that it was all just a bit too filling. I didn’t have room to sample the pastries!

I did enjoy watching the preparation of some Bakery-2tarts. Don’t they look gorgeous? As much as I enjoyed breakfast, the next time I’m going right for the pastries, if only to report on their quality. (I’d do anything for you. What a giver, I know.)

I’d also like to go back and try a panini. I make paninis at home, but I’ve never ordered one. I’m curious to know if I could learn anything from sampling theirs.

The prices are reasonable.

  • Omelettes: $6.95 to $7.50
  • Sandwiches: $4.90 to $5.75
  • Paninis: $5.75 to $6.25
  • Quiche: $5.50
  • Soup: $3.50 to $4.25
  • Salads: $5.50 to $6.75

There are also gourmet coffees, teas, and smoothies available.

French Bakery Cafe’s three locations:

  • 1005 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad, CA * (760) 729-2241
  • 1223 East Vista Way, Vista, CA * (760) 945-9797
  • 1328 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar * (858) 847-3382

My only complaint: I wasn’t able to locate a website for this chain of restaurants. What restaurant doesn’t have a website in 2007?
