Did You Hear That?

Did You Hear That?

At approximately 12:46 PST today, I heard two quick, loud bangs that sounded like large rocks hitting my garage.  I ran outside to see what it was, and found my neighbor outside, wondering the same thing.
The first thought that crossed my mind was shelling at the marine base, but it was too loud, too near.
A couple of minutes later, we got our answer when a friend called and suggested it was the space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere.
I thought that the shuttle had been delayed, and hadn’t realized that it was being diverted to the Mohave Desert due to weather conditions.  …read more

Great Scot! It’s the San Diego Highland Games!

If you’ve never been to the Highland Games, you should have no problem finding them.  The bagpipes can be heard for miles around!  When you see the men in kilts, you’ll know you’re there.
Along with bagpiping,  and drumming competitions, there will be critiques and competitions for drum majors that they take very seriously – very.
Highland dancers will entertain the crowds all weekend long, as they compete in large and small groupings of …read more

What Does the Vista Teachers Association Think About VUSD’s Hiring Practices?

What Does the Vista Teachers Association Think About VUSD’s Hiring Practices?

If you live in Vista, and missed the meeting of the School Board on Thursday night, you missed the debate about a subject that galvanized the teachers and the community – the loss of teaching contracts by many temporary teachers who have proven themselves in every way possible.

The first hint that something was stirring was the number of seats set up at the Foothill Oak Elementary meeting room.  Over 250 chairs were aligned in rows, and they were not only filled, but additional attendees were standing along the back of the room throughout most of the 5+ hour meeting.  (I’m not …read more

Teaching Applicants – Stay Away from Vista

Teaching Applicants – Stay Away from Vista

It’s 1 a.m. and I just returned from the VUSD Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees.  For all I know, it’s still going.
I stayed through a couple of hours of board business and presentations, followed by more hours of impassioned parents, students, and teachers, pleading for the livelihoods of the teachers whose contracts have not been renewed.  At the end of it all (slightly after midnight), the board didn’t even take a moment to reflect on what they’d heard before defending their previous position.  They literally didn’t even confer with each other.  It was unbelievably insensitive, and completely insulting.
There were some heroes tonight.  …read more

Desertscapes: Capturing Light and Shadow

Desertscapes: Capturing Light and Shadow

There’s a new show at the Oceanside Underground Photo Gallery, featuring the southwest deserts.  The featured artist, Peter A. Nagainis, explains his focus:
“Much of my work is done out of concern for the deserts which are a fragile ecosystems, easily prone to damage by human encroachment.  Each animal and plant has struggled years to grow and become established in this inhospitable climate, but can be instantly eradicated by a  single footstep.  I worry when I see building sites being prepared by the square mile, uprooting vegetation and displacing animal life that may never be re-established.”
