More Education for the Masses – The Libraries

More Education for the Masses – The Libraries

In the last article, I wrote about the free classes available online and in the San Diego community.  The free educational resources don’t end there.   Our single greatest free educational resource is, without a doubt, the San Diego Library system.
This has been true since 1882 when the first San Diego library was established.  Our libraries have changed a great deal since then, expanding into 32 branches and two mobile libraries, offering over 4.08 million books, CDs, DVDs and other materials and services Andrew Carnegie never dreamed of.  Are you taking advantage of all of the free educational materials and services now available at your local library?

Education for the Masses

Education for the Masses

I’m sure you’ve heard that the cost of a college degree is going up.  The current annual cost has been estimated between $12k and $32k.  With students typically attending college from 4 to 5 years, expenses can reach as high as $160k!
Although it is true that the cost of a degree keeps going up, the cost of education may actually be going down – free in fact.

San Diego Needs Police – Independently Wealthy Police

San Diego Needs Police – Independently Wealthy Police

Have you ever dreamed of a life in law enforcement?  Would you like to live in San Diego?  There’s no better time to combine these two goals than now, if you can afford it.
The city of San Diego is very short on law enforcement officers, and actively recruiting.  Fully staffed, the San Diego Police Department employs 2,108 officers.  As of December, the department was 214 officers short.  In January, the figure rose to 222.

Carnival of Cities #6

Carnival of Cities #6

This week’s carnival includes so many U.S. cities, one might think that this was a national event.
Of course I sent an article in from San Diego (about the California Surf Museum), but I wasn’t the only Californian to participate.  A writer from San Francisco wrote about The Castro (a San Francisco neighborhood), while philanthropy in Silicon Valley was the subject of another California blog.  These three articles were the most included from one state, so congratulations to all.

All About Alpine

All About Alpine

Before we say farewell to winter (at 5:07 p.m. PST), I’d like to explore one of San Diego’s eastern communities, the town of Alpine.  Alpine just sounds like winter, doesn’t it, conjuring images of pristine snow-blanketed mountains and lovely ski chalets?  Well, it’s not.  It’s actually more country desert than ski slopes.
Alpine is a small town of about 17,000 people (as of 2006) on 17,000 acres (or roughly 26.56 square miles) in East County San Diego.  It lies on a relatively flat plateau in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains.

Alpine sits thirty miles east of the city of San Diego, and 11.5 miles east-northeast of El Cajon.  Although it’s very accessible, right off Interstate …read more
