San Diego Symphony: This ain’t your granny’s symphony

San Diego Symphony: This ain’t your granny’s symphony

If you haven’t been to a symphony in recent years, you may be surprised to see how it’s changed.  Unlike the stuffy, high-falutin” settings of yesteryear, the San Diego Symphony is vibrant and exciting, with something special to offer all members of the family.
To illustrate what this looks like, you can download a video from their site about the life of Tschaikowsky entitled “Pateticheskaya, Pathetique, A Compassionate Sorrow.”  This video is narrated by Nuvi Mehta (and yes, he is related to famed conductor Zubin Mehta, his father’s cousin).  Mehta walks us through Tschaikowsky’s life and music, bringing him to life, through stories and photographs.  This multimedia …read more

Chargers to Find a New Home

Chargers to Find a New Home

Now that San Diego has resigned itself to the fact that the Chargers won’t be in playing the Super Bowl in 2007, and rumors of Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer’s dismissal have been put to rest, there’s one more pressing issue that affects the Chargers’ future here in San Diego. Where will they play?
Qualcomm Stadium
The Chargers have been playing in Qualcomm Stadium (originally named San Diego Stadium, and later Jack Murphy Stadium) since it was built for them by the City of San Diego in 1967.
In 1984, the Stadium was expanded to nearly 61,000 seats and 50 suites were added …read more

It’s Girl Scout Cookie Time in San Diego

It’s Girl Scout Cookie Time in San Diego

There’s a chill in the San Diego air, but intermingled with the seabreeze is a bit of excitement and the sweet aroma of Girl scout cookies.  Cookie time has just started this week, and girl scouts are now trekking door-to-door, taking orders throughout San Diego neighborhoods for cookies that will be delivered at the end of February or beginning of March.
My daughter is a 1st grade brownie, so we had no experience selling cookies, and I can tell you first-hand that it’s a very different experience than selling boy scout popcorn.

Kudos to Scripps Ranch Bloggers

Kudos to Scripps Ranch Bloggers

I just came across a blog that’s well worth a visit, especially to those interested in Scripps Ranch.

Map pinpointing Scripps Ranch

The San Diego Home Blog, written by Kris & Steve Berg (an absolutely adorable couple of realtors), focuses on real estate in the Scripps Ranch area.
What I’m really enjoying is their series entitled Better Know a Neighborhood, which provides the kinds of details you’d want to know about a community.  The best feature – the video they included today, highlighting the best parts of San Lucerna (a neighborhood within “Scripps Ranch Villages”).

The Resignation of Carol Lam

The Resignation of Carol Lam

I was planning on writing about Federal Prosecutor Carol Lam’s resignation today, so I started reading about her.  Frankly, she’s not all that flamboyant, so I didn’t know much about her.
I had certainly heard about the prosecution of former Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham for bribery and tax evasion last year.    It’s unusual to see a Republican good-ole-boy being brought down so effectively, especially during a Republican administration.  Although I followed the case with fascination, I didn’t remember the prosecutor, as she didn’t make herself the focus of the attention.

San Diego County Crops Damaged in Freeze

San Diego County Crops Damaged in Freeze

Frozen crops in San Diego? If you don’t live in San Diego county, you may find it hard to believe that we consider this a cold winter. I know – we’re just soft. We’re often blessed with summer days in the middle of what we laughingly refer to as winter, and we whine when we have to put on a sweater. Put us in Minnesota for a day, and we’d really know cold, right?
Well, you’re absolutely right, and I’ll acknowledge that it does take a certain brand of nerve to complain about temperatures dipping into the twenties or thirties …read more
